Guidelines: http://www.zebrabooks.com/newcontemp.html
Query Preference: Send 3-5 page synopsis detailing plot
points. First-time authors send complete ms. Previously published authors
send three sample chapters and copy of previous book. Cover letter should
mention previously published novels. SASE. Address submissions to one of
the above editors.
Rates/Terms: Royalties with general distribution.
Wants: 70,000-72,000 word romances in which the primary
plot focus is the romance. Wants "sensual romances with a vivid emotional
tone. The plot should be centered on strong characters and a dramatic conflict,
rich with sexual tension. Given the short format, plots cannot be overly
complicated and the romance should be established early. Subplots can be
varied, but must promote the romance. Romantic suspense and action/adventure
are welcome, so long as they do not obscure the romance. The story can
be in an urban or a rural setting. International settings are acceptable
if the heroine is American. Professions and education levels can vary.
Action should take place in the present, not in memory. Absolutely no time-travel."
Comments: The Contemporary Romance Line is new; the first
books will be out in summer 1999. Zebra books will publish four love stories
each month.

New York, NY 10022
E-mail: dstockwell@kensingtonbooks.com
Website: http://www.zebrabooks.com/index.html
Guidelines: http://www.zebrabooks.com/hispanic.html
Query Preference: Manuscripts should be written in English.
Send cover letter summarizing previously published work and a brief synopsis
covering plot points. First-time authors send complete ms. Previously published
authors send sample chapters and a previously published book. SASE.
Wants: 50,000-60,000 word one man-one woman romances,
with Hispanic characters who authentically reflect U.S. Hispanic culture.
Primary plot focus must be the romance. Secondary focus can be the woman
triumphing over a challenge and asserting her independence and strength.
“The man should have a strong character and exhibit integrity, vulnerability,
and sex appeal.” Subplots and secondary characters should be kept to a
minimum. “The plots should be straightforward and plausible, with elements
of glamour and authentic depictions of latin culture. Most or all of the
story should take place in the United States, but some of the action could
take place in a Spanish-speaking country."
Comments: This is a new line of romances from Zebra.
"These romances will be published in Spanish and English, with texts in
both languages in one mass-market volume. The total book length will be
400 pages or less."
